Meet Types

TIME TRIALS:

This is the first time a swimmer will swim for an official time. Each member of the team swims every stroke and the times are recorded. This intra-squad meet affords swimmers and coaches an opportunity to assess skills as well as providing racing experience. Results of time trials determine "A" and "B" teams.

DUAL MEETS:

Meets between WCSC and one other team are called dual meets. Coaches determine all entries and schedules are posted on the bulletin board prior to each meet. Dual meets include individual as well as relay events, usually in the following order:

  1. Medley Relay
  2. Individual Medley
  3. Freestyle
  4. Breaststroke
  5. Backstroke
  6. Butterfly
  7. Freestyle Relay

Normally, Wednesday and Thursday evening meets begin at 6:00pm with warm-ups 1/2 hour prior to the start. Be sure to check the pool bulletin board for meet-specific information. Dual meets usually last about 2 and 1/2 hours.

INVITATIONAL MEETS:

These are large meets that involve eight or more teams. Some invitational meets have qualifying times as a pre-requisite for entry. Swimmers and their parents must be sure to sign-up to enter most of these meets. Sign-ups must be completed by the posted deadline. The coaches enter the relay teams. Invitational meets charge entry fees which WCSC pays for out of its fund-raising proceeds. However, if a swimmer signs up for an invitational meet and does not swim, the team will charge that swimmer his entry fee. In addition, if a swimmer is signed up for a relay at an invitational and does not swim or notify the coaches that he is unable to swim with sufficient notice, that swimmer will be charged the entry fee for the entire relay team.

INVITATIONAL MEETS THIS YEAR:

Aqua Pentathlon which is sponsored by our team is an invitational meet. Our team will be swimming at the Woodlands and Battle of the Ages Invitationals. Coaches choose who is invited to swim at Woodlands. Parents and swimmers sign up for events at Battle of the Ages. Battle of the Ages has many events including double distance freestyle and age groups are split into each age year.

AQUA PENTATHLON:

Our team has sponsored this meet for 40+ years! The competition is reserved for the top eight teams from the prior year's County Meet. Each team enters 2 swimmers per age group (but not 6 and under) and each swimmer swims all four strokes plus the individual medley. Coaches determine who will swim for WCSC. This is a fast and fun meet and parent help is always needed. If your child is chosen for this meet, you will be required to work at the meet.

WALNUT CREEK ALL-CITY MEET:

This is our team's major fund-raiser. It takes place over two days, Saturday and Sunday, in mid-July. All team members are expected to swim this meet and all parents are required to work this meet 2 4 hours shifts. Usually, WCSC swimmers swim every event they can which is 3 individual events. Every recreational swim team in Walnut Creek is invited to attend. Each race is divided into two divisions determined by final times, so there is recognition for both "A" & "B" swimmers. The meet concludes with the parents' relays and the always-popular coaches' relays.

CONTRA COSTA SWIMMING LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIPS (LEAGUE):

This is two-day meet with the four other teams in our league: Pleasant Hill, Dana Hills, LMYA and East County. All swimmers are encouraged to swim all events. Swimmers and parents are responsible for sign-ups. Relays will be chosen by the coaches. All teams are required to provide parent workers for this meet. The meet concludes with the parents' relays and the always-popular coaches' relays.

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY RECREATIONAL SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS (COUNTY):

This meet is reserved for swimmers who meet the designated qualifying times for the event(s) they swim. A swimmer must swim the qualifying time during a dual meet or an invitational meet. The swimmers who qualify for this meet continue to practice for two weeks after the League Meet. All other swimmers stop practice after the League Meet. Everyone is invited to the League Meet Party (and the Team Banquet). This is one of the largest meets of its kind in the U. S. Swimmers and/or parents must complete entry cards. Coaches choose the relay teams. If your child makes county like all invitational meets there will be required to work at the meet.
